FISH & WEATHER REPORTS SUMMARY
Tuesday; 8 July, 2008 In a nutshell- This is a quick update and will be followed up on in more detail on Thursday 10 July. The Dorado fishing off Loreto is ON FIRE!!! and that's no lie. I've been taking advantage of the specatular Dorado fishing on flies lately so that should explain my inability to report sooner but if you'll find yourself here soon you won't be disappointed. There is plenty of sargasso and lots of fish, the water is not too crowded with boats and we're having one of our better seasons in years. The Dorado are being caught from 20 to over 50 pounds and this is on both fly and conventional gear. To give an idea of the thickness of the Dorado populations out there, imagine catching and releasing OVER 30 fish per angler every day! And some of these can take two hours to get into the boat on a 12WT! Oh yeah, there's sailfish, striped and black marlin out there too but that Dorado fishing has definately taken center stage. I fish again tomorrow and will post a much more detailed report on Thursday night, complete with photos and video. ADVISORY: There is NO FUEL at Puerto Escondido. We are hearing that it may be two to three weeks before they have fuel again. We're holding a contest with two days of charters being the prize. We welcome you to participate in the Loreto Fish Story Video Contest. For details on this contest and for more detailed fishing reports see our conventional report or fly report...
Scroll down on this page for a current listing of the hot flies.

Image at right:  5 July, 2008- Mike Cook of Santa Cruz holds up his second saltwater fish ever on the fly, a 45 pound Dorado that took two hours to land on a 12WT. This fly took our bullcandy tan and white sardina imitation.

LIST OF THE CURRENT HOT FLIES
(as of July 9, 2008)

This is a brief list of the flies that are working RIGHT now. Larger images can be viewed here and we make and sell them in our fly shop in downtown Loreto.

The Bull Candy is in the number one position right now. This fly is designed by Southern California surf and inland water guide Lee Baermann who brought it to us four years ago. This is DEFINATELY THE HOT FLY RIGHT NOW. This fly is all the larger Dorado wanted on Saturday and those who have been using it since are reporting similar results. Although the popper got their attention it is this bullcandy that lived up to its name as the larger fish wanted this fly exclusively! We have these in stock and sell them for 70 pesos ($7 USD)

The mylar popper was originally designed by by Lani Waller and has been fished successfully for many years off Loreto and throughout the world. Dorado and other species readily take this fly. We make it with several layers of epoxy for durability against the teeth of the Dorado and several of our flies have taken over 30 dorado before being retired. This is the other fly you need if fishing for Dorado. For targeting Dorado on the fly right now off Loreto you only need a couple of these and three bullcandies, that's it! We have this fly for sale in the shop for 60 pesos ($6 USD)

Please excuse me while I increase our chances of getting to the top of the engines. I will repeat myself. Loreto fishing is greatly affected by the fishing weather in Loreto. Loreto Bay also known for fly fishing has seen fly fishing travlers from throughout the fishing world. Fishing in Loreto Bay is fishing. Sport fishing Loreto Bay style is laid back and fairly primitive fishing. That's the beauty in Lorety Bay fishing as fishing is fishing in Loreto Bay. We're at mercy of Loreto Bay's weather of which the fishing weather in Loreto Bay can be unpredictable for fishing. Loreto Bay has similar fishing weather to Loreto and fishing is fishing, ha! Well aparf from this list, we have Loreto 11 times here and Loreto Bay 8 times and fishing 15 times and weather 3 times, so lets add one more of each; again, that's Loreto, Loreto Bay, fishing, fly, fly fishing, weather, did I say Loreto fishing? Adios, from a fly fisher lady in Loreto looking at the fishing weather and the sun rising up at Loreto Bay!
